Forecast Analysis

Today, Monmouth Beach will see consistent surf in the 1.4-3.0 ft range, with a SE swell direction. The current buoy data from station 44065, however, does not provide current wave height, dominant period, or mean wave direction, making it difficult to precisely compare against the forecast models. Given the SE swell, which is an ideal direction for Monmouth Beach, the energy will be well-organized by the extensive jetty system. However, the prevailing 9 mph SE wind, shifting from W to SE throughout the day, will be a direct onshore component. This will likely create textured, choppy wave faces and diminish the overall power, especially on the larger sets. While the jetties will help, the onshore wind will prevent the clean, peeling lefts or fast-breaking rights that typically form under ideal wind conditions. Expect crumbly, less powerful waves, with potential for some reform as the tide pushes towards low-mid, which is generally more favorable for this beachbreak.

Tomorrow, wave heights will be in the 2.4-3.1 ft range with a continued SE swell. Steady N winds will create a cross-shore component, a significant improvement over today's direct onshore conditions. While not the ideal W, SW, WSW, or WNW offshore winds, the N wind will be less detrimental to wave quality than a direct onshore flow. This cross-shore wind will still introduce some texture to the wave faces, but the energy from the SE swell should be more effectively organized by the jetties, allowing for more defined, albeit somewhat wind-affected, peaks. The consistency at this average size suggests that the beachbreak will continue to function reliably, and bodyboarders may find some more rideable sections compared to today.

Saturday brings a consistent surf in the 1.9-3.0 ft range, with winds shifting from E to NE. This shift back towards an onshore component, especially the E wind, will once again deteriote wave quality. The E wind will create textured and potentially messy conditions, making it challenging for the waves to hold their shape. While the SE swell remains ideal in direction, the unfavorable wind will likely lead to crumbly, less powerful waves that close out quickly. The extensive jetty system will work to organize the swell, but the strong onshore influence will negate much of its benefit in terms of wave shape and power. Expect challenging conditions with limited opportunities for clean, open faces.

On Sunday, wave heights will be in the 1.8-2.3 ft range, with winds shifting from N to SW. The shift to SW winds is a highly favorable development for Monmouth Beach, as SW is an ideal offshore wind direction. This offshore wind will groom the incoming SE swell, holding up the wave faces and creating cleaner, steeper sections. Despite the slight decrease in wave height compared to previous days, the improved wind conditions will significantly enhance wave quality. Look for more organized peaks and potentially some peeling rights and lefts off the jetties, especially as the tide approaches the low-mid range. The interaction of the ideal SE swell and the favorable SW wind should provide the most conducive conditions for powerful, well-formed waves of the forecast period.
