Today: Ortley Beach will see consistent surf in the 1.2-2.0ft range, with the dominant SE swell direction aligning well with the ideal conditions for this open beachbreak. Current buoy data from station 44091 shows a significant wave height of 2.3 ft with a 9-second dominant period from the SE, indicating the potential for occasional, slightly larger sets than the forecast suggests. Winds will shift from W to E. The initial offshore W wind will groom the incoming SE swell, creating cleaner, more organized wave faces. However, as the wind shifts E, it will introduce texture and chop, particularly on the wave face, making for less defined sections. Given Ortley's sandbar-dependent nature, the SE swell and moderate period from the buoy could create some fun, shifty peaks, especially around low to mid-tide when the bars are more effective at shaping the wave.
Tomorrow: Wave heights will increase to 2.1-2.9ft, maintaining consistent surf with the favorable SE swell direction. Steady N winds will be cross-shore, creating some texture and potential for crumbled lips on the wave faces. While the N wind is not ideal offshore, it's also not directly onshore, so ridable sections should still be present. The increased wave height should help compensate for the less-than-ideal wind, providing more push for bodyboarding maneuvers. Look for the sandbars to be working effectively, potentially offering some steeper, faster-breaking rights and lefts.
Saturday: Wave heights will taper slightly to 1.7-2.2ft, with consistent surf. Winds will shift from SE to NE. The initial SE wind will be onshore, significantly impacting wave quality by creating a choppier, less organized surf zone with textured faces. As the wind shifts NE, it will remain onshore, further degrading wave shape and power. This onshore flow, combined with the SE swell, will likely lead to soft, crumbly waves, making it challenging for defined rides. The shorter-period energy will likely close out quickly on the shallow sandbars due to the onshore push.
Sunday: Expect consistent surf with wave heights in the 1.6-1.9ft range. Winds will shift from N to SW. The initial N wind will be cross-shore, similar to Tomorrow, creating some texture on the wave faces but still allowing for ridable sections. As the wind shifts SW, it will become cross-offshore. While not ideal W/WNW/NW offshore, a SW wind can still help groom the wave face, especially if the sandbars are well-defined. Given Ortley's sandbar reliance, this cross-offshore component could help clean up the smaller swell, allowing for some improved shape and potentially some short, quick rides, particularly on the lower to mid-tide. The prevailing SE swell will continue to provide energy to the sandbars.
